Understanding Your Proposal

Our Process

We follow this general outline for nearly all organizing projects, adjusting as-needed.

  • We’ll establish bins for donating and discarding (Tartan will provide these temporary bins). We gladly take one carload of donations, trash, and recycling per day. We have a running list of great local organizations where we take your donations.

We’ll collect the contents of the bins at the end of the project.

  • We will sort your categories into groups, and in many cases, sub-groups within that. We’ll use existing spaces to lay out items for review and supplement with our own tables if needed.

We do a light cleaning of spaces before items are replaced.

  • If requested, we will go through categories with you to review what should stay and what should go. We highly, highly recommend this process, even if you’ve recently done a purge.

A decision-maker will need to be on site or reachable by phone for this portion. For multi-day projects, we can leave this as “homework” per client’s request.

  • Tartan will design a layout for each area that will best optimize space and establish specific homes for every category.

We’ll source organizing products (and quality check them upon arrival), if needed.

Finally, we’ll place your items in their new, permanent homes.

  • Finishing touches vary based on the project and your aesthetic preferences, but can include:

    • Neatly folding, hanging, and placing all items.

    • Sorting of items within categories as appropriate.

    • Wrapping loose cords to tidy up electronics.

    • Placing felt pads on heavy appliances for easier movement.

    • Arranging product labels to face the front for better visibility.

    • Turning all bottle heads to face the same direction (it makes a surprising visual impact).

Color sort ing when and where it makes sense, but we always group first by whatever makes the most sense functionality-wise.

    • Label where appropriate.

    • A walk through with you to show the layout of the fresh space.

Our Methodology

Budgeting for Labor

The proposal provided estimates the time we will need to complete priority spaces. It’s important to note that many things factor into the time estimates, but now is the point when we know the least about the project.

Your labor budget is a fixed cost (just keeps it simple!), and you can rest assured that we don’t waste a second of our time on site—there are no idle hands at Tartan.

For travel outside of Forsyth County, Tartan uses a per diem amount to cover costs for accommodations and meals while on-site in other cities. We use the standard IRS rate of 65.5 cents per mile for mileage.

Budgeting for Products

Any suggested products in your proposal are just a starting point for things we might consider adding to each space based on our first look. Let us know if you have any preferences; otherwise, we’ll make the call based on our knowledge of the space.

We will work with you to determine budget and product plans for each space based on:

  • the amount and types of items remaining after editing

  • existing built-in shelving

  • products you already own and want to reuse

  • your overall aesthetic goals

Requirements and Requests

Your availability: To complete the project on time, clients should be available for intermittent questions via text or call while we are working. You don’t have to be on-site, and you may prefer the “big reveal!” of being out for most of the work day.

Littles and fur balls: We ask that children and pets are out of the space where we are actively working to ensure the safety of your pets and children and the efficiency of the process.

Logistics: Notify us ahead of time about any particular parking requirements, gate codes, alarm codes, or house key needs so we can prepare and communicate with our teams.

Health and Safety:

  • If you or any member of your household is sick (COVID-19 or other contagious illnesses), we ask that you reschedule your appointment.

  • Let us know the location of any firearms or other weapons so we can be aware and extra careful around these items.

  • If you have a specific request that will make you more comfortable while we are on site, please let us know! We’re guests in your home and will treat your things and your space with the utmost respect.
